Team Coaching and Training

The definition of a team withers it a Navy Seal Team  or a bunch guys and  gals playing dodge ball in the park. The definition remains the same:” People working together to accomplish a common goal.”

 

Bruce Tuckman in 1965 published a theory known as “Tuckman’s stages of group development”. According to this theory, there are four phases of group development: Forming, Storming, Norming, Performing. He stated that these phases are all necessary and inevitable for a team to grow, face up to challenges, tackle problems, find solutions, plan work, and deliver results.

In my years of experience of building teams, I found this model to be true. So how do we get to performing from forming? I treat the team as a single decision-making body helping them reach a clear agreement at the important  stages of their relationship development. We, as a team can get to the point of performing in several ways. Each team is different and has their own challenges and strengths. So I would use assessments as needed and coaching to a new awareness that translates into actions and decisions that are owned by the team even if when those actions are carried out by select members of the team.
